Broken Wash

This wash is applied in such a way that not every part of the paper is covered, and there are little gaps and strings of white dots where the brush has failed to make contact with the tiny hollows in the surface of the paper. When the wash is applied these scattered white spots give a reasonable impression of texture. It is not nearly as a precise and literal as a carefully painted foreground but is is bolder and possesses spontaneity. Sometimes, it is necessary to place a preliminary layered wash before applying a broken wash.
